The year was 1762 when John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, sat at a daylong poker game and found his stomach growling. What to do? Eat or play poker? The First Sea Lord of the mighty British Navy, celebrated explorer and patron of the arts found himself in quite a quandary. Not to worry. Sir Montagu, a.k.a. Mr. Earl Sandwich IV, being one for discovery and creativity, knew exactly how to have his game and eat some too. With a snap of his royal fingers, he summoned his chefs to prepare his meat and place it between two slices of bread.

With one hand he held out a royal flush and with the other hand he picked up a “sandwich”-- undoubtedly the world’s most significant invention for busy, modern man and woman. And, as they say, the rest is history. (Or legend—depending on your school of thought).

RAE’s in Nashville is dedicated to the tradition of serving you a sandwich fit for nobility on the go (or on a lunch break). Our signature Hot Brown—smoked turkey, crispy bacon and tomato--all smothered with creamy cheese sauce--is a southern sensation. Our cold, smoked Turkey Pepper Jack is guaranteed to add some scrumptious royal spice to your lunch.
